Greater Mount Zion was founded and organized in 1927 by Elder Edmond Griffin and his wife, Mother Leatha Griffin. Their cousin, Elder Solomon Stanley, built the first church building in 1930 where it is presently located at the corner of Saxon and Nassau Streets, two blocks from the campus of Florida A and M University. Under the leadership of five pastors, the church has undergone several renovations and growth. In addition to the main edifice, the Church owns three houses (an annex housing the administrative offices and two rental properties), also two vacant lots for additional parking . The active membership is approximately 268 family-focused believers who gather to glorify God and practice "The Great Commission." There are nine Deacons responsible for assisting the pastor in meeting the spiritual needs of the congregation. The Church has five major ministry leadership focus areas: administration, education, discipleship,community outreach, and worship.
